It is easier to see the enemies body language, to see if you're being flanked, and it is easier to aim your blows around shields and towards the head. This is especially true on horseback. (Ranged combat is easier for me in first person as well.) Tournaments are a great way to train skills, make money, and get some strong early game gear.
