"According to the data received from the banks, the total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes received back from circulation after the announcement on May 19 is Rs 2.72 lakh crore up to June 30, 2023.
The central bank advised the public to deposit Rs 2,000 notes — introduced during demonetisation in November 2016, when Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were withdrawn — into their bank accounts and/ or exchange them into notes of other denominations at any bank branch. It also advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 notes with immediate effect.
On May 19, the central bank after announcing the withdrawal, said that people can deposit or exchange the Rs 2000 notes at bank branches or designated RBI offices till September 30.RBI said that the banks have received ₹ 2.72 lakhs of ₹ 2,000 notes from 19 May to 30 June which constitutes 76% of the total circulation and now ₹ 0.84 lakh worth of ₹ 2,000 notes are out
The design of these notes is similar in all respects to Rs 50 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (new) series, the central bank said in a statement. "All banknotes in the denomination of Rs 50 issued by the Reserve Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender," the RBI added.
